Indonesia to Participate in the 111th International Labour Conference: Manpower and Social Protection on the Agenda

The Indonesian government has announced that it will be participating in the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) from June 5–16, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. The ILC is an annual conference that establishes and adopts international labour standards and is a forum for discussing key social and labour questions.

At the 111th ILC Session, five major committees will discuss issues related to manpower, said Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah. The first of these committees is the Committee on the Application of Standards, which will discuss reports concerning the implementation of conventions ratified during the 2022 reporting period.

The second is the Standard Setting Committee, which will discuss the formulation of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO’s) manpower standards on internships. The third is the Recurrent Discussion Committee, which will discuss social protection. The fourth is the General Discussion Committee, which will talk about the just transition, including eco-friendly industrial technologies and policies. The fifth is the General Affairs Committee, which will discuss convention suggestions and revision recommendations for some of the 15 International Labour Instruments that are safe and healthy, in accordance with the ILO’s principles and basic workplace rights.

“The five committees had considered a series of topics established by the Governing Body,” the minister said at the 111th ILC Preparation Meeting. She pointed out that there will be several important considerations within the execution of the ILC session, namely the women’s participation rate in delegations. She said she expects women’s participation to be equal to men’s in all delegations, whether from the government, private sector, or trade unions.

“I expect that for next year’s ILC meeting, delegations, in their suggestions, provide opportunities for women,” Fauziyah added.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ILC session will consider emerging issues and challenges related to the pandemic, including the impact on the world of work and efforts to promote decent work during the crisis.

At the ILC session, the Indonesian government will share its views on key issues affecting the world of work, including policies and practices related to the future of work, social justice, and gender equality.

This conference marks an important opportunity for Indonesia to join other countries in discussing and shaping the future of work globally. It’s an opportunity for Indonesia to discuss its successes and challenges in implementing labour reforms and showcase its commitment to advancing workers’ rights.

This participation is one of many steps taken by the Indonesian government to strengthen its role in promoting labour reforms and secure the rights of workers both nationally and globally. The conference will provide a platform for Indonesia to establish partnerships with other countries to achieve common goals related to labour reforms.

In conclusion, the Indonesian government’s participation in the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference is a positive step towards promoting workers’ rights and advancing labour reforms globally. It presents an opportunity for Indonesia to showcase its commitment to the future of work, social justice and gender equality while engaging with other countries to achieve common goals. The focus on women’s participation in delegations is particularly noteworthy as it reinforces Indonesia’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
