Microsoft is adding native support for RAR, 7-Zip and GZ archives in the upcoming version of Windows 11, expected this week. Microsoft integrated support for ZIP archives into Windows in 1998. However, third-party applications must be installed to work with 7-Zip (.7z), RAR (.rar) or gz (.gz) archives. The current expansion of support for compression formats uses to uses open source project libarchiveit is likely that in the future users will see support for other common archive formats, such as tar or bzip2.
