There were clever women in northern Germany as early as the Middle Ages. In the Principality of Lüneburg alone there were six Cistercian convents, with pious and learned women. Because the monasteries were also places of education for women. For centuries, the monastery has offered one of the few opportunities for women and girls to learn to read and write.
