There is no longer space in New York City to house the migrants who continue to arrive, according to Mayor Eric Adams. There are already more than 73,000 who arrived in the last year. Mónica Tavárez is an activist with the Artists-Athletics-Activists organization and she picks up migrants, single men, who sleep on the train to find them housing.
“There is no plan for them, it has been difficult for them to establish themselves so they were in a shelter in Brooklyn and they were having a very bad time so they decided to get out of there because they had been robbed, many bad situations had happened and they came and went to sleep to the subway”, comments Mónica Tavárez activist of Artists, Athletics Activists.
Tavárez obtained videos of migrants sleeping in difficult conditions in municipal shelters, on stretchers in shared rooms, and says that in one there are no showers and the toilets are deplorable. Reasons that push migrants to look for another place to sleep. New York authorities have said the subway safety program has connected more than 4,600 homeless people with shelters and called on the federal government to allow migrants to work and address, among other things, their housing problem.
“Right now we are denying them that opportunity by denying them to work legally. An underground market is being created where people can be exploited, unable to pay taxes, working long, difficult and dangerous jobs because they live in the shadow of the American dream and not in front of it. Which increases the risk that they could be abused,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams.
The mayor is also seeking an administrative court to strike down the right to refuge law in the absence of resources and support from the federal government to establish sufficient shelters.
The arrival of more migrants has exacerbated the budget deficit facing New York City, according to Mayor Eric Adams, who announced cuts in various government programs.
