His consistent refusal to work for decades helped him achieve dubious fame. Now the former unemployed Arno Dübel has died in the UKE in his hometown of Hamburg.
He was the man for whom the word “consonant prominence” seemed to have been invented: Arno Dübel, according to his own statements, has been continuously unemployed since breaking off his apprenticeship in 1976 – and proud of it. Or at least clever enough to secure a livelihood by saying that he just doesn’t feel like working at work.
Now Dübel has died at the age of 67. According to MOPO information, he was admitted to the UKE around two weeks ago and died in the hospital just a few days later.
Arno Dübel: “Germany’s cheekiest unemployed person”
For “Bild” and Co. he was “Germany’s cheekiest unemployed person”. A found food that allegedly proved that fraud with social benefits is commonplace. In fact, Dübel always freely admitted that he would do almost anything to avoid having to work.
He was already making headlines in the early 2000s when he trotted through the afternoon talk shows and shared wisdom like “I don’t want to take anyone’s job away. I’ll stand in line at the very end – but at the very back” or “Whoever works is stupid”.
A late career as a pop singer or actor was denied to Arno Dübel
Attempts to make a career out of the dubious reputation of being the most unwilling to work Hartz IV recipient failed: his hit singles (“Der Klugere kippt nach”, “Ich bin noch lieb”) flopped, and he fell out with the producer.
Then a “manager” appears who allegedly bought all the rights to the “Arno Dübel” brand. But even his full-bodied promise to help Dübel to an acting career remains without any discernible effect. Dübel continues to live in a retirement home in Rahlstedt – until he is hospitalized in May and does not return. (mp)
