18 year old Darrell „IShowSpeed” Watkins has a knack for getting himself into unusual situations that often end in a lot of shouting. With this content, the streamer on YouTube has been going through the roof for some time. Now he wanted to fool his viewers into making an expensive purchase, but that backfired.
What kind of YouTuber is this? IShowSpeed has been going through the roof on YouTube since mid-2021. He always attracts attention because of his impulsiveness and his actions, which sometimes seem thoughtless:
For the viewer it is never quite clear to what extent it is a matter of productions with which the 18-year-old is marketing himself, or rather of youthful carelessness. The fact is, however, that IShowSpeed hits a nerve with its actions: In 2022 no streamer on YouTube was more successful.
IShowSpeed has been banned on Twitch since 2021. The same happened to DrDisrespect, who is now also successful on YouTube.
Streamer wants to trick its viewers, but that goes wrong
What has he done now? In a current stream, IShowSpeed was on the Roblox platform and looked at expensive items there. He asked his viewers to send him the rarest items.
A fan lured the streamer with a special hat: the “Midnight Blue Sparkle Time Fedora” for 14 million Robux, which currently corresponds to around 143,000 euros (as of May 24, 2023).
The 18-year-old thought it was funny to make his viewers think he would actually buy the hat, only to back out at the last second. At this point he (still) had a little over 19 million Robux in his account.
Because the streamer was apparently not aware that after the question of whether you would like to buy the item, you would not be asked for an additional confirmation as to whether you were really sure. Instead, a message about his successful purchase appeared on the screen.
We have included the recording of the stream for you here, starting with the timestamp 1:00:10 here we go (caution, loud!):
IShowSpeed is completely ready after purchase
How did the streamer react? His first reaction was several loud shouts of “No” followed by an “I have to get this refunded!”. After much nagging, the streamer finally explains that he thought the site would ask for confirmation again.
In the meantime, he seems downright close to tears.
Is the money gone? Yes, because there is currently no refund option on Roblox (via Roblox). So the streamer’s only option is to resell the hat. However, as he finds out immediately after his purchase, the Fedora sells for only 4 million Robux on average.
Add to that the fact that Roblox keeps almost 30% of the sale price, so IShowSpeed would have to sell the hat for more than 20 million Robux to recoup its loss.
Why is the hat so expensive? To the uninitiated, that might seem like an absurdly high sum for a digital hat. But the fedoras from the “Sparkle Time” series are strictly limited and are sold for thousands of euros due to their exclusivity.
The blue hat that IShowSpeed accidentally acquired is the fifth in the Sparkle Time series and is limited to 100 pieces. The items in the “Dominus” series are even more expensive: one of the hoods was sold for 200 million Robux in December 2022, holding the record for the most expensive purchase in Roblox.
The prices in Roblox are thus quite on a level with the sums that collectors shell out for rare skins in CS:GO.
