“This measure was taken in this way in response to the seriousness of the events and the need to ensure safety conditions in sports facilities,” the National Football Association and First Division clubs said in a statement.
And the two parties added, “We decided to end the national championship of El Salvador for the 2022-2023 season.” The federation added, “There will be no champion,” after the tournament reached the first-leg quarter-final stage.
Twelve people were killed and hundreds injured in the stampede that took place on Saturday at the Aliansa stadium, after a gate fell into the stadium, causing a crowd of fans who had come to watch a league match between local teams Aliansa and CD FAS.
About 500 people have been treated for various injuries on the field, while 88 people have been taken to hospital and most of them have since been discharged.
In order to determine the three teams that will represent El Salvador in the CONCACAF International Championship, the Football Association and the league clubs proposed that the champions and runners-up of last year’s Apertura, CD FAS and Jocor respectively, and the “team with the highest score” in the current regular season qualify for the two Clausura tournaments. And Apertura and therefore Aguila, pending the approval of CONCACAF.
On Tuesday, El Salvador’s Football Association ordered Aliansa to play its home matches behind closed doors for a year, blaming the club for the incident at Cuscatlan Stadium.
