“The Devastation of Bakhmut: Before and After the Russian Invasion”

Today, Thursday, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense published, on its Twitter account, a video clip showing the massive destruction of Bakhmut, in the east of the country.

The ministry attached the video with a comment that read: “Bakhmut before and after the Russian invasion.”

The head of the Russian “Wagner” group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said on Wednesday that more than 20,000 of his forces had died in the long battle to control Bakhmut.

Analysts believe that the nine-month battle for control of Bakhmut alone claimed the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers, including convicts who reportedly received little training before being pushed into the battlefront.

On Sunday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced full control of the city of Bakhmut.

“The attack teams of the Wagner Military Group, with the support of artillery and aviation from the Southern Battle Group, completed the liberation of the city of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut),” the Russian news agency “TASS” quoted the Ministry of Defense as saying in a statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the “Wagner” group and his country’s army after announcing control over the city of Bakhmut, according to a statement by the Kremlin carried by Russian news agencies.

And the “TASS” agency reported a statement by the Kremlin stating that “Putin congratulated the Wagner offensive units, as well as all the soldiers of the Russian armed forces units who provided them with the necessary support to complete the operation to liberate Artemovsk,” the Soviet name for Bakhmut.

However, the Ukrainian General Staff said on Wednesday that “heavy fighting” was still going on inside Bakhmut.

And the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Sersky, stated that the Kiev forces “continue their defensive operation in Bakhmut,” and that they have achieved “successes on the outskirts of the city,” without giving further details.
