On Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 May, free appraisals of your goods are organized by the Rossini auction house in Caen and then in Bayeux.
For the second time, the Rossini auction house, located in Paris, comes to Normandy to organize free expertise. On Tuesday May 23 in Caen and Wednesday May 24 in Bayeux, auctioneers appraise the goods of the inhabitants: jewellery, works of art, paintings, wines, stamps… “If a person wants to sell at auction, we take care of everything. We fill out a contract, we bring the objects back to Paris and we manage the sale”, explains François-Xavier Poncet, auctioneer.
Jewelry, paintings, stamps…
The concept pleases. A hundred appointments were made over the two days in Calvados, whether to sort, empty drawers, simply know the value of an object. “Sometimes we make people disappointed”, smiles the expert. Like when a resident of Douvres-la-Délivrande came with three boxes of jewelry. Only a wedding band and a gold signet ring had real value. For example, “this fancy brooch is made of rhinestones and not diamonds”. Verdict? It is worth around 50 €, no more. He continues his expertise. This time he falls on a gold medallion of the Augis house on which he is inscribed “More than yesterday, less than tomorrow“. This one is worth a hundred euros.
In reality, the auctioneer evaluates everyday pieces in the vast majority of cases, using several tools such as a magnifying glass, a diamond tester or even a scale. But sometimes he stumbles upon treasures. “A person came with about forty gold coins from Napoleon, there were some for €10,000. I also saw a very beautiful bracelet with emeralds dating from the 19th century which can be worth between 3,000 and 10,000 €”. In 2021, he was entrusted with a collection of Norman Saint-Lô crosses. “About 150 pieces of silver and rhinestone jewelery dating from the 18th century. We sold them for €19,000”. Sometimes, when more in-depth expertise is needed, several specialists bring their perspective.
