“Heavy Rainfall Hits Parched Regions in South of Spain, Closing Schools and Cellars”

Parched regions in the south of Spain are experiencing heavy rainfall. The Spanish authorities have closed schools, universities and nurseries. Many cellars were flooded and roads had to be closed.

The provinces of Murcia and Valencia and the Andalusia region have been particularly hard hit. In the city of Cartagena (Murcia) on the Mediterranean Sea, cars were almost up to the roof in water.

In some places in Valencia, more rain fell in a few days than in the past six months combined, reports the Spanish weather agency. The city of Ontinyent broke the record for the most rainfall in a single day in May in the past hundred years, with up to 130 liters per square meter.

The question is whether this rainfall can help mitigate the effects of the prolonged drought that has plagued Spain. If the soil is too dry, it is difficult for water to sink in. Especially when it comes to large quantities at the same time.

The country was on track to record its driest spring since records began in 1961. National precipitation between October 2022 and May 21 this year was more than a quarter less than the average for that period.
