But what happens at Paul Doumer Center ? Located in the heart of historic center of Caen (Calvados), this shopping center is emptying at an impressive speed. Only FNAClocated on the first floor, resists and remains locomotive of the center managed by Paref company since 2019.

Fewer and fewer shops

On the ground floor, there are more empty spaces than open shops. The latest closure is that of the Courir brand, which has only kept one store, that of Mondeville. Are always present: Lafayette Pharmacy, the jeweller’s Gold Story and at the perfumery Marionnaud.

“It’s true that not much is happening,” admits Camille Brou, trade assistant at the City of Caen. It’s a shame to have empty squares in this place in the city center. »

Upcoming changes

But that should change soon. La Paref filed an application for a building permit at the beginning of March “to modify the front of the shopping center”, continues the elected official. These first redevelopments aim toopen the center to the outside with visibility on shop windows, which is not currently the case.

Currently, the Paul Doumer center is not open to the outside world. No windows are visible from the outside.

This will be followed by interior fittings, on the ground floor. There will be modifications to the layout of the commercial squares. There may be fewer of them, but they will be larger to meet the needs.

Inaugurated in 1988

On September 13, 1988, the Paul-Doumer center was inaugurated by the then senator-mayor Jean-Marie Girault. At the time, it was the first shopping center in Caen. Located at the corner of rue de Bras and rue Paul Doumer, it replaced the bus station which closed in 1981.
Two years of work will be necessary to see the birth of the shopping center. 30 brands adorn it, as well as a residence for the elderly, a hotel and a car park with 212 public spaces.
In 2013, the Caen center celebrated its 25th anniversary. In two decades, the number of brands had dropped to 15, but the stores had seen their surface area expand. Today, only four brands remain.

Contacted on numerous occasions, the Paref company has not yet responded to our requests, in particular to find out the work schedule and the locations of future shops.
