Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russia admits its territory was attacked. This happened in the Belgorod region, 672 kilometers (km) from Moscow.
Tuesday, Russia said its armed forces has beaten back a group of soldiers and military equipment from Ukraine. It was called the “most serious attack on Russian soil” since the start of President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.
This prompted the Russian authorities to declare an “anti-terror regime”. Even evacuated nine border villages.
“In the counter-terrorist operation, the nationalist formations were blocked and destroyed by airstrikes and artillery fire,” the Russian Defense Ministry said, quoted AFP, Tuesday (23/5/2023).
“The remaining (fighters) were brought back to Ukrainian territory, where they were continuously showered with gunfire until they were completely annihilated,” the ministry said in a statement.
Russian troops are also said to have killed more than 70 Ukrainian fighters and destroyed four armored vehicles. The report said that 12 civilians were injured, although independent verification is difficult.
“What happened yesterday raises deep concerns and once again confirms that Ukrainian soldiers are continuing their activities against our country,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Meanwhile, the attack on Russia was also announced by the British Ministry of Defence. Intelligence noted that Russia is now facing increasingly serious multi-domain security threats in its border region.
“Loss of fighter planes, attack of improvised explosive device on railroad track and now direct partisan action,” Britain wrote.
Kyiv itself has denied involvement. It is also known that the anti-Kremlin Russian Legion of Freedom had claimed responsibility for the attack on Belgorod.
Ukrainian Pilot Trained F-16
On the other hand, yesterday, Ukrainian pilots began training to fly the United States (US) F-16 fighter jets. This is done in Poland.
This was emphasized by the Head of Foreign Policy of the European Union (EU) Josep Borrell this Tuesday. Just after the US gave the green light.
“I am pleased that finally the training of F-16 pilots has begun in several countries. It will take time, but the sooner the better,” Borrell said at a meeting of European Union defense ministers in Brussels.
A European diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed. He confirmed that training had started in Poland although the defense ministry in Warsaw declined to comment.
Russia itself has previously threatened the West if it really sends F-16s to Ukraine. The US itself authorized the delivery after Ukrainian President Zelensky guaranteed the F-16s would not attack Russian territory and were intended only in Ukrainian skies.
