The role of the mid-boss of the organization in ‘Hwaran’… “The ‘one-top’ movie with the main character, Hong Sa-bin”

“You’ve already done a lot of success… I did it without a role I wanted to play.”

(Cannes=Yonhap News) Reporter Bo-Ram Oh = “The Cannes Film Festival is such a great opportunity and an honor. It seems that all the countrymen come to places like this.”

Actor Song Joong-ki enters Cannes for the first time after 15 years of debut with the movie ‘Hwaran’. This work will be screened as a world premiere on the 23rd (local time) after being invited to the ‘Notable Gaze’ section of the 76th Cannes International Film Festival.

Song Joong-ki, who met on the 22nd, the day before the premiere, said, “When I heard that the film was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival, I did not expect to be invited at all.”

“A few months ago, while I was filming the movie ‘Ro Ki-Wan’ in Hungary, I received several missed calls from the director of the production company of ‘Hwaran’. After hearing that it was ‘Cannes’, I felt so good that I couldn’t concentrate on acting the sad scene. Haha.”

As he was stepping on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time, he said that he sought “advice as a senior in the industry” from his wife Katie, who had been to Cannes several times before. Katie, a former actress, was in her ninth month of pregnancy, but accompanied her husband to Cannes to support her.

Song Joong-ki laughed, saying, “To be honest, all my nerves are on the soon-to-be baby. I want to finish the film festival schedule quickly.”

‘Hwaran’ is a noir film about the story of Yeon-gyu (played by Hong Sa-bin), a boy who lives a hellish life, as he steps into a more dangerous world, organized life. Song Joong-ki played Chi-gun, the middle boss of this organization.

It is director Kim Chang-hoon’s first feature film, and many responded that it was surprising that Hallyu star Song Joong-ki took on a role other than the main character. As the fact that he appeared in ‘No Guarantee’ became known, public curiosity grew.

Song Joong-ki recalled that time, “When I wanted to do a dark genre, the scenario I received was ‘Hwaran.

“I realized, ‘Ah, in the industry, there are some good roles if I’m not the main character.’ I was worried about it. So I said I would do it without paying. But is this something that will become a hot topic?”

It is said that the reason why he stopped considering the importance of his role was when he took on the young Lee Do (King Sejong the Great) in the drama ‘Deep Rooted Tree’. It was the time when he rose to the ranks of stars with ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, so there were fans who tilted their heads at Song Joong-ki’s choice at that time.

Song Joong-ki said, “One of the best choices I made during my career as an actor was to take on that role.”

Even at the filming site, he said to Hong Sa-bin, a newcomer to his junior, “Do whatever you think to your heart’s content.”

Song Joong-ki emphasized, “I thought it was right because that friend is the main character, and the movie flows all the way around his gaze.”

“I always worked that way on set. There were many things that Hong Sa-bin had to do in the play, difficult parts, and things to carry. It’s a one-top movie for Hong Sa-bin. So, when Hong Sa-bin did action, I only reacted.”

However, as much as he has the aura of a star actor, Song Joong-ki shows a sense of weight comparable to that of the main character.

Another reason to draw attention to Song Joong-ki is that he is a character that contradicts the kind and bright image he has shown before. Chi-gun, who mercilessly assaults a subordinate who offends him and tries to pull out his nails for stealing belongings from the organization, is a character rarely seen in Song Joong-ki’s works. The same goes for the appearance: partially cropped ears, a darkened face, and a stretched T-shirt.

Song Joong-ki said, “I hope you can see a side of me that you didn’t know before.”

“I think it sounds a bit cheeky when I say this. I’ve had too many (commercial) successes so far, so I wanted to try something fun and new. “
