“The UAE’s Pivotal Role in Supporting Climate Action: Insights from IRENA Council’s 25th Meeting”

The UAE plays a pivotal role in supporting international efforts for climate action.

ABU DHABI, 23rd May, 2020 (WAM) — Dr. Nawal Al Hosani, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), said that the 25th meetings of the IRENA Council, which kicked off today in Abu Dhabi, the “capital of sustainability,” witness the launch of IRENA’s strategy, priorities and future work programmes.
She added, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the 25th IRENA Council, with the participation of member states, is paving the way for the COP28 Conference by examining the agency’s pivotal role in this event that the UAE will host at the end of this year.
She referred to IRENA’s role in achieving a clean energy transition, in addition to discussing the enhancement of global energy security through high-level sessions and the fair and sustainable energy transition in the world.
She said that the UAE plays a pivotal role in supporting international efforts for climate action, facing climate challenges, and joint cooperation to reach and implement solutions, noting that the UAE’s initiatives in this regard always have a practical role in finding solutions.
She added that the UAE has invested in more than 70 countries around the world in the field of renewable energy, in addition to local investments, working with its partners around the world, and providing platforms for dialogue and discussion to find solutions, including Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, hosting IRENA headquarters, hosting COP28 by the end of this year, and other global platforms that It brings together decision makers, experts and stakeholders from around the world under its umbrella.
She referred to the UAE’s efforts to involve youth and women, enhance their role in climate action and the energy transition, and promote the sustainable development process.
