Madonna to Visit Israel for the Jewish Holiday of Shavuot

Pop superstar Madonna is expected to be in Israel this weekend for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. She will not perform on stage during the strictly private trip, Israeli media reported.

The singer, who unofficially added “Esther” to her name in 2005 and celebrates certain Jewish holidays – even though she is not Jewish herself – is expected to visit the grave of her spiritual leader, the Rabbi Philip S. Berg, as well as that of Isaac ben Solomon Luria Ashkenazi, mystical 16th century rabbi, known in Hebrew as HaAri Hakadosh.

Shavuot will begin at nightfall on Thursday and end on Friday evening.

The 64-year-old star does not perform on Friday and Saturday nights because of Shabbat and has said in the past that Israel “is the center of all the energy in the world”.

Madonna owns a house in Tel Aviv. She performed three times in the country.

In 2019, when Israel hosted the Eurovision Song Contest, Madonna took part and performed two of her hits, drawing criticism both for her singing and for trying to convey a political message by posting a Palestinian flag and an Israeli flag on the backs of two of his dancers.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) quickly issued a statement saying that the flags displayed during Madonna’s concert had not been pre-approved.
