Zelensky visited the Vuhledar-Maryinka defense zone in the Donetsk region
“Returning from a foreign visit, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the forward positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Vuhledar-Maryinka defense zone in the Donetsk region on the occasion of Marine Corps Day,” the Office of the President informed.
The Supreme Commander-in-Chief listened to the report of Lieutenant-General Yury Sodol, Commander of the Marine Corps and OTU “Donetsk”, on the current situation on a certain sector of the front.
Zelensky also talked with Ukrainian soldiers and took part in the celebrations.
As the head of state said, new brigades provided with modern equipment and weapons will be formed.
Zelensky awarded the military, and at the end of the event they presented the president with their flag, a commemorative plaque and chevrons of all units of the Marine Corps.
Ukraine celebrates Marine Corps Day
Marine Corps Day is a professional holiday of the Marines of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is celebrated annually on May 23.
The holiday began in 2014 and was celebrated on November 16 in 2014-2017. The current date for the celebration of May 23 has been established since 2018 by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 145/2018 “On the Day of the Marine Corps of Ukraine”.
On this day, the foundation of the modern Marine Corps was laid. Modern marines today are heroically defending Ukraine from Russian invaders.
Zelensky visits Ukrainian defenders at the front
Recall that in March, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the advanced positions of the Ukrainian military in the Bakhmut direction.
