He National Film Day is celebrated in homage to the first storyline movie The May Revolutiondirected by Mario Gallo and premiered at the Ateneo Theater of Buenos Aires on May 23, 1909.

The May Revolution was the first feature film directed by Mario Gallo, a filmmaker from Barletta, Italy, an immigrant in our country, who made the staging influenced by the French cinema of the time, the film d’art. Previously, Gallo had directed the short films Squares and walks of Buenos Aires (1907), Dorrego’s execution (1908) y Camila O’Gorman (1910).

National Film Day: what is “The May Revolution” about

The film was starred by the Uruguayan actor Eliseo Gutiérrez, César Fiaschi and the director himself. Gallo focuses on administrative revolts, from the first meeting of leaders at the home of the merchant Rodríguezabout the distribution of the distinctive ribbons of the revolution in the city, and even about the proclamation of a new government led by Saavedrapresident of the new board. The film’s story takes some licenses, such as the presence of the General Jose de San Martin.

It was filmed in 35mm format, in 1955 it went to 16mm and in 2009 it was restored by Cinecolor Argentina to re-release it at the 65th Congress of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).. The Argentine silent cinematography had an important development, with around two hundred films. Gallo would become a pioneer of this national cinema with his historically themed films.
