The United States prioritizes providing Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets and will work towards that goal in the coming months.
This, according to a correspondent “European Truth”U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at a briefing on Monday.
“President Joe Biden has made it very clear that we will begin training the Ukrainian military to fly the F-16 and will work with our allies and partners to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets,” the State Department spokesman said.
“I can’t announce when or how this will happen, or from which countries they will come. But this (providing the F-16 – ed.) is our priority, and we will begin to implement it in the coming months,” he added.
Miller stressed that the United States, like other states, does not approve of the use of Western weapons to defeat Russian territory.
“But I think it’s important to remind everyone that, of course, it was Russia that started this war. It is Russia that continues to attack Ukrainian civilians. And it is Russia that shells schools, hospitals and civilian infrastructure,” he said.
“Therefore, it is Ukraine that should decide how it wants to conduct its military operations. But it is Russia that is the aggressor in this war,” added the representative of the US State Department.
Last week, the UK announced the launch of an international coalition of countries aimed at training Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighters, including the F-16. The coalition already includes the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, USA and Portugal.
The White House also confirmed that in the coming months, the United States and allies will discuss when and how much Ukraine will receive modern fighters.
