NORTH SJØEN (VG) The world’s largest warship, USS “Gerald R. Ford”, is heading for Norway, and will arrive in Oslo during the next few days as planned.
The ship is on its first operational voyage ever, and Oslo will be the first port visited. The ship is now in the North Sea.
– This is Norway’s security, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp) to VG and NTB on board the ship.
On Monday, he visited the aircraft carrier out at sea together with the chief of defence, the minister for research, the US ambassador to Norway and several official representatives.
The warship is now sailing together with the Norwegian frigate Roald Amundsen.
– This is a very concrete sign of the security guarantee Norway has through NATO, says the defense minister.
The ship is named after the 38th American president – Gerald Ford – who was president from 1974 to 1977.
The ship is 333 meters long – or 1,092 feet. It is 76 meters high and has 25 floors. The top speed is 30 knots, or 56 kilometers per hour, according to wikipedia.
The ship departed Naval Station Norfolk on 4 October 2022 for her maiden voyage.
