“Three Dutch Mountaineers Found Dead in Canton of Valais: Investigations Ongoing”

In the canton of Valais, rescue workers were only able to rescue three mountaineers dead. The two men and a woman from the Netherlands left the Schmadrihütte in Stechelberg BE in the direction of Grosshorn on Friday. Because it was no longer possible to contact them on Friday, the cantonal police in Bern were notified on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at around 4:50 p.m. and a comprehensive search operation was initiated immediately.

Employees of the Swiss Alpine Rescue, mountain specialists and other employees of the Bern canton police undertook several search flights with helicopters from Air-Glaciers and Rega. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, at around 9.35 a.m., the three missing persons were finally located below the Jegi glacier in the municipality of Blatten in the canton of Valais. They could only be recovered dead.

According to initial police findings, it cannot be ruled out that the three people died in an avalanche. The deceased are a 32-year-old and a 40-year-old Dutch man and a 30-year-old Dutch woman who lived in the canton of Bern.

Under the direction of the public prosecutor’s office of the canton of Valais, the investigations by the cantonal police in Bern into the events are ongoing.
