Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A mysterious rock fell onto the roof of a house in New Jersey, United States, moments ago. After further investigation, experts found the stone was none other than a super rare meteorite around 4.6 billion years old.
Experts from the Department of Physics at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) conducted several tests and observations over a period of time to confirm the mysterious stone’s status as a rare meteorite.
As for this rare meteorite, it is a high class type called ‘stony chondrite’. This type of meteorite that deserves to be called a treasure trove is the oldest ‘species’ of rock in the solar system.
The head of the TCNJ Physics Department, Nathan Magee, was the first to be contacted by the local police after this rock was discovered on May 8, 2023, quoted from BGRMonday (22/5/2023).
According to the team of experts, it is very rare for chondrites to hit a population area. Generally, this meteorite will fall in remote areas such as Antarctica.
The meteorite that stuck above the house in New Jersey has a size of 6-inches. When it was first discovered, this meteorite stuck on the roof of the house.
Then, the meteorite pierced the roof until it fell on the floor of a room. The meteorite was also observed to be still warm.
Because of its very old age, this rare meteorite is believed to have been present at the very beginning of the formation of the solar system. Experts say further study of the meteorite can reveal new facts about the creation of planet Earth, how the solar system was formed, and other important data.
