London reports that the unit is likely to consist of at least one squadron of Su-24 FENCER and Su-34 FULLBACK fighter-bombers and a squadron of attack helicopters. The combination of aircraft types suggests that the main role of the group will be related to ground attack missions.

Russian media reports suggest that the Russian Ministry of Defense aims to attract highly qualified and motivated pilots by offering high pay and allowing retired aviators to apply, according to the British ministry.

The formation of the group highlights Russia’s view that its regular air force squadrons have been severely underperforming in their primary role of attacking Ukrainian lines, British intelligence concluded.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in the early morning of February 24, 2022, with missile fire, airstrikes, and the arrival of ground forces. Russia initially cited the “denazification” of Ukraine as one of the goals of the invasion.

The occupiers in Ukraine have suffered heavy losses and are accused of deliberate killing of civilians, as well as other war crimes.
