In the Netherlands there are two types of nettles: the small and the large nettle. The main difference between these two is that the small one is an annual and the large one is perennial. This is because the large nettle has strong roots that expand considerably under the ground. The small species, on the other hand, can be removed easily and quickly because they have the right small roots. You can remove them in the following ways:
Just pull
Before you start removing the nettles, it is important to put on good gloves, for example made of rubber. Then remove the plants, starting by removing the roots from the ground. Make sure you do this accurately and pull the entire root out of the ground, otherwise they will be back in no time. They’re not called weeds for nothing!
It is best to do this in the spring, because once they flower they disperse their seeds very quickly. And then you are even further away from home. Always try to remove the plant immediately when you see it. The longer you leave them, the larger and tougher the roots will become.
Grab the garden tools
You can easily remove the weeds with a garden claw, by hoeing or with a stabbing shovel. This will damage the roots, making them easy to remove.
Cover soil
If you suffer from nettles in your borders, cover the soil with ground cover plants. This ensures that nettles – but also any other weeds – don’t stand a chance. You can do this by, for example, laying down wood chips. This also ensures that your soil stays moist longer. Very nice during hot, dry summers!
You can also opt for ground-covering plants, such as catnip and lady’s mantle. These plants are very handy, but are also a nice addition to your borders. Besides, it also looks nice.
