A smashed Kurt Cobain guitar sold for 10 times more than expected at an auction in New York. The guitar was sold for almost $ 600,000 (converted about 554,000 euros).
Auction house Julien’s Auctions expected the damaged black Fender Stratocaster to fetch about $60,000, but it turned out to be ten times that. The auction house calls the amount “stunning”.
The Nirvana frontman smashed the guitar on stage. The instrument was put back together, but was no longer playable. All band members have signed the instrument.
It’s not the only time a Cobain guitar that was smashed has gone under the hammer, by the way. Last year, his electric Fender Mustang was auctioned for $ 486,000 (converted almost 450,000 euros).
Julien’s Auctions is auctioning more than 1200 objects from famous artists this weekend. Stuff from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, Madonna and Michael Jackson, among others, also went under the hammer.
