Researchers at the Nuova Villa Claudia Clinic in Rome, Italy, have found that a combination of Allurion’s swallowable gastric balloon and the anti-obesity drug, liraglutide, is a safe and effective means of boosting weight loss. The 181 patients from three centres in Italy, Egypt and Spain that participated in the international multi-centre study lost an average of 13kg and 14% of their initial weight after 16 weeks of balloon treatment. After liraglutide treatment the participants lost an average of 18kg and 19% of their initial body weight. The balloon stayed in patients for 15 to 17 weeks on average before being excreted naturally. The treatment was realised without surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia. One benefit is that the therapy may offer an alternative to endoscopy for treatment where it is desirable.
