“Double-digit number of emergency operations during severe thunderstorm in Emmendingen and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald districts on May 21, 2023”

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., there were a double-digit number of operations in the area of ​​responsibility of the Freiburg police headquarters.

A storm warning from the German Weather Service was issued during the period in question – due to heavy local thunderstorms, there was sometimes very heavy precipitation.

The main focus of the operations of fire brigades, road maintenance departments and police was in the districts of Emmendingen and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, here the area around Titisee-Neustadt.

In addition to numerous flooded cellars and flooded streets, the emergency services had to take longer-term measures in the following locations in particular:

   - Landkreis Emmendingen / Bundesstraße 294 / Biederbach-Frischnau:

Due to the large amounts of water, there was a landslide around 5:00 p.m., so that there was dirt on the road for a few meters – this then had to be closed until just before 7:30 p.m. until the cleaning work was completed.

   - Landkreis Emmendingen / Landesstraße 107 / Elzach-Prechtal:

The L 107 had to be closed by the police for more than an hour shortly before 6:00 p.m. because large amounts of water ran over the adjacent slopes onto the road and it was no longer possible to drive safely on the road.

In this context, a sports car parked there ran full of water and had to be towed away due to the technical defect it caused. The property damage is likely to be significant.

   - Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarwald / Landesstraße 156 zwischen 
     Neustadt und Kappel bleibt bis auf Weiteres gesperrt

The masses of water near the Gutachtal Bridge at around 5:30 p.m. undermined the road over a length of more than ten meters in such a way that it threatened to collapse. Therefore, the section between the outskirts of Neustadt / junction B 31 and Kappel was completely closed. A corresponding traffic warning service has been set up.

According to the first assessment by the road construction authority, long-term construction work will be necessary – the L 156 will therefore be closed for at least several days.
