According to Sunak, China is “the only country with the means and intention to reshape the world order”. However, he added that the UK and other G7 nations would pursue a common approach to de-escalating the challenge, rather than “cutting ties”.
Sunak was speaking to reporters at the end of a G7 Group of Seven summit held in Japan and largely dominated by the Ukraine issue.
“China poses the greatest challenge of our time to global security and prosperity, they are increasingly authoritarian at home and assertive abroad,” Sunak said, as quoted by Sky News. “It’s all about eliminating risk, not letting go,” he continues.
“We will cooperate as the G7 and other countries ensure that we can mitigate the risks ourselves and the supply chain vulnerabilities that we have seen from China, take the necessary steps to protect ourselves. Against hostile investment and do so in a non-destructive way,” Sunak explained.
On Saturday, China was also urged to pressure Russia to end its war in Ukraine. In a joint statement, the G7 leaders emphasized that they do not wish to harm China and seek “a constructive and stable relationship” with Beijing.
“We call on China to pressure Russia to stop its military aggression and immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine,” the statement said.
