Sea Lions Playing Video Games: A Curious US Navy Training

That technology is advancing more and more, we know that. But it seems that the United States has gone too far and brought a very curious aspect to everyone.

That’s because a US Navy training is putting sea lions to play video games. That’s what you read. These animals are having contact with video games and developing some unusual and curious skills.

Right off the bat, it can scare anyone who reads this news, not least because they are irrational animals, that is, they are not capable of thinking. But that’s where you’re wrong! Scientists at the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) believe that this is a way to cognitively enrich sea lions and open more doors for research with the animals.

How do sea lions play?

One of the animals at the US Navy research facility, named Spike, has developed the ability to press a button with his nose and guide a cursor through a maze.

It may seem very strange, but this is a way that specialists have found to keep the animals happy, since they showed a positive response to training.

According to the training information, Spike and two other sea lions have already completed about 450 game runs. However, when we add more animals that are in the same program, the number rises to 750.

Kelley Winship, a scientist on the program that trains the animals, said she enjoys doing this. Not only because of the advancement in research and work that they have, but also because of the happiness that sea lions show in game sessions. Check out:

“That’s why I’m doing this, you know? I really care about these animals and the lives they lead. I love all the cool things we can see with this survey, but at the end of the day, I want them to be happy and having fun.”

Despite being very unusual, the research is completely interesting and brings good results for advances in studies. Mainly to understand the behavior of animals!
