Olga Lidia Jacobo Casanueva, director of Cecmed, said that after evaluating the files presented by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), they considered that the vaccines meet the requirements established in terms of demonstration of quality, safety and efficacy.
With this step, the emergency use authorizations granted to immunogens during the pandemic are without effect, explained the director of Cecmed during a ceremony at the Havana Convention Center, in which the developers and producers of Cuban vaccines participated. against covid-19.
Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment, granted the status of a high-tech company to the Finlay Vaccine Institute.
During the ceremony, the main Cuban institutions that intervened in the development and production of vaccines were recognized. The legacy of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the main architect of the national biotechnology industry, was also highlighted.
Doctor Manuel Limonta Vidal presented his book Fidel, interferon and Cuban biotechnologyin which he remembers when the Commander in Chief placed him in charge of the team whose task was to produce interferon on the Island for the treatment of different diseases, including cancer.
“The publication pays tribute to his memory and is motivation for the new generations of young scientists, by reflecting the history of that epic and Fidel’s participation in that project,” he said.
