On May 19th and 20th, 2023, the Giro d’Italia passed through our canton. The cantonal police draw a very positive balance of this important international sporting event.
The shortened stage of the Giro d’Italia on May 19, 2023 started in Valais, in le Chable/VS to Crans-Montana. On May 20, 2023, the 184 riders set off from Sierre to return to Italy via the Simplon Pass and reach Cassano Magnago.
The Giro is the second largest cycling race in the world. It is broadcast in 200 countries and reaches around 651 million television viewers. Almost 50,000 people followed the event on these two days on the edge of the Valais roads.
In terms of security, the passage of the Giro d’Italia through our canton required the mobilization of 1’400 people (370 cantonal police, 910 civil protection, 10 fire brigades, 40 KWRO144, 15 DFM-GEIII, 55 others (municipal, regional and city police , Army, Customs, etc.).
The recent signing of an international agreement has allowed the cantonal police to work closely with the Polizia stradale Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta also on Italian territory, on both sides of the Simplon Pass.
The balance drawn by the Valais canton police is therefore extremely positive, as this event took place without any major incidents.
