Marcel slides in Inside today to promote his book, but of course it is also about his ‘Talpa holiday job’ with Gijs, which will start on June 5. How are you Marcel & Gijs look exactly? What kind of guests are coming? Marcel’s answers show that not much is clear yet. Also not whether they maintain an independent status and how many commercials come in between. “But you discuss that beforehand, don’t you?” laughs Wilfred Genee. “You said, ‘We want carte blanche’, didn’t you?” Marcel does not give a clear answer to that either. “Marcel, after this enthusiastic story, the viewers are looking forward to it, I’m sure,” says Johan Derksen cynically. “You don’t really look like you’re looking forward to it,” Wilfred agrees. “We just start this adventure neutrally,” Marcel responds.
The tone has therefore already been set, but a little later it is René van der Gijp who unleashes a long exchange of words. He points out that he thinks Gijs ‘Groenteboer’, the teasing nickname for the presenter they took over from Özcan Akyol, takes himself ‘very seriously’. René brings to light a conversation from behind the scenes, in which Marcel addressed Wilfred on that nickname. “It’s not for nothing that we called him Greengrocer and that you take him aside to say: ‘That won’t happen again, because we won’t accept that.'”
“No, not at all,” says Marcel, but René continues his story. “And a week later he says about us that we are retarded, then I read that and I think: he is not that far off. I don’t mind, but he doesn’t care either.”
Marcel: “I don’t intervene at all, but it didn’t go that way at all. I said I found his sense of humor moderate. I think name jokes… if you can’t come up with anything better. I wasn’t angry.”
“You said we shouldn’t do that anymore. That stings me a bit,” René continues. “Two people who make fun of everyone and then one is there: ‘You shouldn’t make fun of us’. Then I think: come on please.”
“You weren’t clear,” concludes Marcel. “I said I didn’t like the joke. If that’s not allowed anymore.”
Wilfred also makes himself heard. “You did tell me you thought it was lame and derogatory, that we didn’t need to make such a joke.”
Enter John. “There is only one derogatory and that is Groenteboer. But I don’t mind,” says De Snor. “Vegetable farmer is only being derogatory”, René agrees. “He has to decide for himself, but then you also have to expect him back. And what I find the worst, what I find really annoying, is that Eus says something and you attack him (referring to Wilfred, ed.) .”
“I’ll call John de Mol and we’ll call it off,” jokes Johan in the heated discussion about their summer replacements. “This is how we liquidate all competitors.”
Dismay is now dripping from Marcel’s face. “Marcel, come on! Say what you think”, Hélène Hendriks encourages him. “Well, I don’t like it at all. I just remember it very differently. I remember we had a completely different discussion.”
Marcel makes it clear that both he and Gijs ‘do not care’ that they call him Groenteboertje, but agrees that he called it ‘cheap and derogatory’. “Yes, so what?” “Two people who piss everyone off and then they start falling over Groenteboertje”, René repeats.
Wilfred puts an end to what seems like an endless altercation and starts the commercial. “Welcome back to one of the most awkward broadcasts of the season so far,” he resumed the show after the break.
You can watch the clash between the men below.
Inside today can be seen every working day at 21.35 on SBS6 and you can look back here.
Marcel also looks ahead with moderate enthusiasm in front of the RTL Boulevard cameras Marcel & Gijs. And how is he actually at home? His wife Eva Hoeke talks about it at the book launch of Total.
