Drogheda United Manager Labels Victory Against Shamrock Rovers “Biggest Win to Date”

Drogheda United Manager Praises His Team’s ‘Biggest Win to Date’

Drogheda United’s manager, Timmy Doherty, has praised his team’s “biggest win to date” as they defeated reigning champions Shamrock Rovers 2-1 at Tallaght Stadium on June 4th. The win came after eight games without a victory for Drogheda and sees them climb to third place in the League of Ireland table, just two points behind second-placed Sligo Rovers.

Speaking after the game, Doherty explained that being a part-time operation can be draining at times, but results such as this make everything worthwhile. He also revealed that the club is currently seeking investment to help strengthen the squad during the upcoming transfer window.

Doherty was delighted with his team’s performance and praised them for sticking to their game plan, staying compact, frustrating the champions and hitting them on the counter. He said that some of their performances this season haven’t yielded the results they deserved, but he trusts the process and believes in his team’s potential.

“The difference in everything between Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United is unbelievable,” said Doherty after the win.

“If only people knew what our lads and I have to do, even to get some of those players. It’s really, really tough. It can be draining at times but nights like this make it worthwhile.”

He added: “I can only imagine what we could be, the potential, if we got some help.”

Doherty went on to compare Drogheda’s recent run of form to that of Shamrock Rovers’ six-match winless streak at the beginning of the season. He said that he had spoken to Rovers’ manager, Stephen Bradley, before the game and they both agreed that when things aren’t going your way, you just have to keep doing what you’re doing and trust that the results will come.

“We were not going to start doing things differently. We were playing really, really well. I didn’t ask them to work harder because as far as I’m concerned, they couldn’t be working any harder. So, we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing,” said Doherty.

Despite Rory Gaffney pulling a late goal back for Shamrock Rovers, Drogheda held on for a vital three points and extended their unbeaten record against Rovers to five games. Doherty singled out goalkeeper Colin McCabe for praise, saying that he had been brilliant and won them the three points.

“The pleasing part of it was the fact that they scored, and we didn’t collapse. Calm heads, Gary Deegan, Ryan Brennan and Colin McCabe,” said Doherty.

The win is a significant boost for Drogheda United’s hopes of a top-three finish this season and demonstrates the team’s potential to challenge for honours in the future.

In conclusion, Timmy Doherty was delighted with his team’s performance, which he described as clinical against Shamrock Rovers. He praised his players for sticking to their game plan and hopes that this victory will give them the belief they need to push on this season. Despite being a part-time operation, Doherty believes that Drogheda United has huge potential and is actively seeking investment to help strengthen the squad in the upcoming transfer window.
