The Tergooi MC is moving to a new location today, but it has 30% less capacity. The hospital investigated the possibility of treating people at home. The healthcare providers found a solution in home chemotherapy, and with that the success was discovered.
Need more staff
Treating patients at home is not a budget cut. It even slightly increases the costs because more staff has to be deployed. “But on the other hand there are other cost-saving measures,” says Van der Velden. However, it is more efficient to treat people in a hospital ward.
In any case, receiving chemotherapy at home or in the hospital remains a choice of the patient. The treatment of other diseases, or the administration of antibiotics, can also be given more often at home in the future, to the satisfaction of both patient and nurse.
