This is definitely one of the most entertaining rivalries on the ATP Tour: Daniil Medvedev vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas. It all started during their very first meeting at the 2018 Miami Masters 1000. A match won by the Russian, visibly very annoyed by the behavior of his opponent, which resulted in a very heated exchange between the two players. Since then, relations have calmed down somewhat even Medvedev, after his victory at the Dubai tournament at the start of the year, insisted on defending his compatriot Andrey Rublev following derogatory comments made by Tsitsipas towards him.
On the pitch, the two rivals faced each other 11 times before meeting in the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome. Confrontations which have often turned to the advantage of the world number 3 (7 successes). On clay however, the balance sheet is balanced with a victory on both sides.

Clay may be the surface where Medvedev feels the least comfortable, but he’s been doing quite well this season. Gilles Cervara’s protege reached the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo and advanced to the semi-finals in the Italian capital. To reach this stage of the competition, he overcame Emil Ruusuvuori, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Alexander Zverev and Yannick Hanfmann, from qualifying. Very convincing during this fortnight, the Russian became more and more comfortable on the ocher surface. In time for Roland-Garros?
Opposite, Stefanos Tsitsipas has proven throughout his career that he is one of the very best clay court players in the world. The Greek has notably won the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 twice (2021 and 2022) and was a finalist at Roland-Garros in 2021. In Rome, the world number 5 did not drop a single set to reach the semis. -final. Nuno Borges, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti and Borna Coric broke their teeth on his imperial service. Much more to his advantage on earth, Tsitsipas is the logical favorite in this duel.

WOMEN’S DRAW (FINAL)

What a dream fortnight for Anhelina Kalinina! The Ukrainian knocked out three seeds to reach a WTA 1000 final for the first time in her career. A course marked by a 3h50 marathon in the quarter-finals against Beatriz Haddad Maia. Thanks to her sublime career in Rome, the world number 47 will integrate at least the Top 25 in the WTA rankings from Monday. Kalinina, dominating on clay on the ITF circuit in 2021, finally reveals her full potential to the world.
But opposite stands Elena Rybakina, winner of Wimbledon 2022 and runner-up at the Australian Open at the start of the season. The Kazakh, however generally not to her advantage on the ocher surface, managed a nice tournament in the Italian capital although she took advantage of two retirements: Anna Kalinskaya in the 3rd round and Iga Swiatek in the 1/4 final. To reach the final, her 4th of the season, Rybakina still dismissed Jelena Ostapenko, who was very fit in Rome.
