Cough usually occurs due to irritation of the throat or airways and interferes with daily activities. So what are the ways to relieve a cough?

The causes of coughs vary, ranging from allergies, asthma, to the influence of drugs.

There are many ways to get rid of a cough that you can try, from natural to medicinal. These methods are quite effective in eliminating cough as well as accompanying symptoms, such as sore and itchy throat.

Here’s how to relieve a cough:

1. Drink honey

Quoting various sources, honey is anti-inflammatory which effectively reduces inflammation in the throat. Honey can also help break up mucus and soothe sore throats.

You can drink one tablespoon of honey every time a cough appears. Not only that, you can also mix honey into a cup of warm tea or warm water with lemon.

2. Consumption of spices

Some spices are anti-inflammatory so they can reduce swelling in the throat. Spices are also rich in antioxidants to boost the immune system.

Some spices that can be consumed include turmeric, garlic, ginger, and peppermint. To consume it, simply add spices to warm tea or you can also take herbal supplements.

3. Gargle with salt water

Salt water can soothe inflamed tissue and promote healing. Salt can also kill bacteria in the mouth and throat.

One study found that gargling with salt water three times a day reduced cough duration by 2.4 days. Gargling with salt water can also reduce the duration of the hoarseness, cleanness, and nasal congestion.

Simply mix half a teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water and gargle for about 30 seconds. After that, take it out.

4. Lots of water

When a cough attacks, the body needs to be properly hydrated so that the throat doesn’t dry out. Try to drink more than eight glasses of water per day.
