The Importance of Encrypted Messages: How End-to-End Encryption Protects Your Conversations

Malang Posco Media – Encrypted messages, including DM (direct messages) alias private messages, have recently become a hot topic of conversation due to the latest features on a social media platform.

Technology users need to understand how important encrypted messages are because they relate to the protection and confidentiality of conversations. WhatsApp, in a press release, Friday (19/5), explained that encryption is a way to lock data so that only people who have a certain key (which is called an encryption key) can open it.

Encryption that is popular in instant messaging applications is end-to-end, which ensures only the sender and recipient can read the message. The platform used to send the message can’t even read the message.

In end-to-end encryption, only the sender and recipient have the key to open and read the message. The use of this technology protects messages from attacks, including man-in-the-middle attacks that exploit vulnerabilities to eavesdrop.

While it’s common with diamond messaging apps, not all platforms implement end-to-end encryption as a default or main setting. There are applications that set end-to-end encryption to be turned on manually.

Messaging apps that have end-to-end encryption as a main setting usually also protect voice messages, photos and documents.

End-to-end encryption is not only important for messaging activities, but backups as well. End-to-end encrypted backup protects messages stored in the cloud, regardless of brand used.

On the WhatsApp app, if you turn on encrypted backup, the platform will protect messages with a 64-digit key or password that can’t be reset if the user forgets it.(ntr/mpm)
