What should you do when you notice unexplained bruises on your skin? Why do they occur and cause concern?
Bruises are caused by very thin capillaries, but how and why?
In the following report, we review the opinions of doctors about the possible causes of bruising on the skin, according to the “Bright Side” website.
1- Training with weights and carrying heavy things
Weight lifting is a secondary cause of bruising, meaning the blood vessels are already weak and physical activity adds the finishing touch.
However, too much exercise can damage even the healthiest capillaries.
For example, weight training can get dangerous if you are not prepared for it.
Even children can get bruised because of the heavy school bags these days that they can barely carry.
He thinks these bruises are harmless, but they are clear evidence that you are overdoing it.
2- Take medications
Taking some medications that affect the blood may lead to bruising ranging from unnoticed to serious.
The cause is often due to antidepressants, painkillers, antibiotics, asthma medications, and iron-containing medications.
But the most common drug that thins the blood and may lead to bruising is aspirin.
When you notice a relationship between medications and bruising on your skin, you should see your doctor. You may need to stop taking the medicine to avoid the possibility of internal bleeding.
3- Blood diseases
Diseases of the blood and blood vessels can cause bruising.
Varicose veins, inherited Willebrand disease, thrombocytopenia, and blood cancers are all known to cause circulatory problems.
Do not delay visiting the doctor, especially when other worrisome symptoms appear, such as pain and swelling of the legs, bleeding gums and nosebleeds, or small bloody spots on the body.
4. Nutrient deficiency
We make sure our children get enough of it, but we forget ourselves, and unexplained bruises can indicate that the body is lacking in some essential elements.
For example, B12 is involved in blood production, vitamin K is responsible for clotting, and vitamin C is important in the production of new tissue. Without it, blood vessels become weak.
Another important vitamin is P, without which it is impossible to produce collagen, which contributes to the weakening of blood vessels and the deterioration of the skin condition.
Iron balance is very important for the body. The condition of the capillaries deteriorates when it is deficient or increased.
But do not rush to buy vitamins, make sure there is a deficiency first and try to compensate for it with your diet.
Green tea, apples, and garlic are good sources of vitamin B. You can get vitamin K from bananas, eggs, nuts, and fatty fish. As for B12, it is found in liver, fish, cheese and lettuce.
5- Hormonal imbalance
Hormonal “fluctuations” are one of the most common causes of bruising, and they can appear when women have low estrogen levels.
This is what happens when menopause, taking hormonal medications, or when pregnant. Lack of estrogen leads to a weakening of blood vessels and rapid damage to the walls of capillaries.
6- Age-related changes
A sad, but normal reason, according to doctors, is age. or capillary erosion. With age, the vascular system weakens and tissues lose their elasticity.
These “age” bruises most often appear on the legs. But they appear due to the slightest trauma, which will not affect even the skin of young people.
7- Diabetes mellitus
Blood and sugar are the first things that come to mind when this disease is mentioned. Diabetes has a negative effect on blood circulation, so bruising is easy. Bruises can be an early symptom of the disease.
Other symptoms: You notice that you are always thirsty, your wounds heal slowly, you feel tired quickly, your vision becomes blurry, and you may notice white spots on the skin.
Which bruises are serious and which are not?
Bruises often turn red immediately after an injury due to blood under the skin.
After some time, the body begins to break down the blood and the bruise becomes black, blue or purple in color. Between 5-10 days, the affected area becomes yellow or green in color. It ends brown 10-14 days after infection, then the color becomes gradually lighter.
Bruising usually disappears completely within two weeks of the injury. Therefore, the appearance of colors different from those we described, or the persistence of the bruise after this period, warns that a doctor should be visited.
