Confusion has arisen over the fate of the four missing children who crashed a plane in the Amazon rainforest on May 1. The Colombian government said on Wednesday that the children had been found alive, but the army denies this.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who had previously shared on Twitter that the children were still alive, also took his message offline again. “I have decided to delete the tweet because it is not possible to verify the information we obtained,” he said.
The confusion arose after a Colombian youth protection organization claimed to have received a message that contact had been made with the children. But that information is therefore uncertain.
The children are thirteen, nine and four years old and eleven months old. The plane was en route to San Jose del Guaviare in central Colombia when it disappeared from radar. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
After the plane crash, emergency services began a search for the missing passengers. The children flew with the pilot and two other passengers, all three of whom were killed. The bodies of three adults were found Monday and Tuesday.
During the search for the children, emergency services found personal belongings near the crash site. They also found a partially eaten apple and an empty baby bottle. As a result, emergency services believe that the children are still alive. They are still being searched for.
