“The Coldest Planet in the Solar System: Uranus”

Jakarta

Many of us think that Neptune is the coldest planet in the solar system. Neptune is often called the coldest planet because it is farthest from the Sun.

Quoted from SpaceNeptune’s average temperature is 214o C below 0. This cold temperature is enough to turn the two main gaseous elements in Earth’s atmosphere namely oxygen and nitrogen into liquid and solid.

It’s just that if you choose Neptune, which is about 4.5 billion kilometers from the Sun, it means that your guess is wrong.

Quoted from page University of Hull, Uranus turned out to be colder than Neptune. Even though Uranus is closer to the Sun than Neptune, which is “only” about 2.9 billion km.

Uranus has the coldest temperature reaching -224 degrees Celsius which makes it the planet coldest in the solar system.

Being the Coldest Planet Due to Asteroid Collision

Written on the Space page, billions of years ago a very large asteroid hit Uranus which caused it to roll sideways. The collision caused Uranus’ inner heat to escape and made it a very cold planet.

The heat inside Uranus is a remnant of the heat created when the planet was formed. The formation of this planet occurred due to small pieces of rock colliding with each other that formed the entire planet over millions of years.

When these rocks collide, they’ll have a little more heat stored up to maintain the temperature of the planet.

Unfortunately, a very large asteroid hit Uranus causing the planet to release all of its heat and causing the planet’s temperature to cool down considerably.

Unlike Uranus, Neptune has never been hit by an asteroid which causes it to retain its heat. Nevertheless, the temperature on Neptune remains very cold, which is around -214 degrees Celsius.

Although Uranus is credited as the coldest planet, there is another place in the solar system that is colder than Uranus, namely the Boomerang Nebula.

The Boomerang Nebula is a cloud of dust and gas which is about 48 million billion kilometers from Earth with temperatures reaching -272 degrees Celsius.

Uranus’s Temperature Is Measured From Earth

On planets that are a short distance from Earth, such as Mars, probes will be sent to find out the temperature which will study the atmosphere directly from the planet’s surface.

Unfortunately, the distance between Uranus and Neptune is quite far from Earth, causing astronomers to find out the planet’s temperature by measuring it from Earth.

Astronomers will measure the temperature by studying the light from the planet. The light will inform the types of atoms and molecules that make up the planet’s atmosphere.

The atoms and molecules then act as a kind of ‘fingerprint’ for temperature planet which causes astronomers to estimate the temperature of the planet.
