Dating back to the Chalcolithic era, between 2700 and 2300 BCE, the site was the cradle of a vibrant culture known as the Fontbouisse culture. This name echoes another similar site near Sommières, where surprisingly similar remains were discovered and studied in the 1940s. left behind a multitude of dolmens and stone villages. More than two hundred of these hamlets have been recorded, but only 20% of them have been explored by archaeologists so far.
