“The Importance of FCTC in Implementing Indonesia’s SDGs for a Healthy and Prosperous Life”

FCTC has an important role in implementing Indonesia’s SDGs.

GridHEALTH.id – The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international agreement drawn up by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effort to control tobacco use which has a negative impact on health, thus summarized from the WHO website.

This agreement was adopted in 2003 and currently has been signed by 181 countries, including Indonesia.

The 3rd goal of Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely a Healthy and Prosperous Life with the target of ensuring a healthy life and increasing the Welfare of all residents of all ages places the point of strengthening the implementation of the FCTC.

However, the application of the FCTC in Indonesia is still not optimal, especially in terms of restrictions on advertising and promotion of tobacco products.

The FCTC has several important components in the context of controlling tobacco use, including restrictions on advertising and promotion of tobacco products, imposing high taxes on tobacco products, prohibiting smoking in public places, and protecting non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke.

In terms of restrictions on the advertising and promotion of tobacco products, the FCTC stipulates that countries must prohibit all forms of advertising, promotion and sponsorship relating to tobacco products.

In addition, the FCTC also emphasizes the importance of imposing high taxes on tobacco products, considering that high taxes can reduce tobacco consumption and increase state revenues.

In Indonesia, the implementation of the FCTC is still experiencing problems.

Even though Indonesia has ratified this agreement, there are still policies that are not in line with the FCTC.

For example, the use of health pictures on cigarette packs is only applied to a few cigarette brands, even though it should be applied to all cigarette brands.

Apart from that, there are still many violations against the prohibition of smoking in public places, and there are also advertisements involving sponsorship of tobacco products.
