Olympique de Marseille condemns the suspension of its playmaker Dimitri Payet and promises an appeal

Olympique de Marseille on Thursday castigated the suspension of its playmaker Dimitri Payet for three matches and two others suspended for having slapped a member of the coaching staff of Lens on May 6, promising “the next commitment of ‘appeal “.

“Olympique de Marseille takes note of the decision rendered this Wednesday, May 17, 2023 by the LFP disciplinary committee against Dimitri Payet (…). This sanction imposed on our player was unfortunately pronounced in defiance of the elementary principles of procedure and the disciplinary regulations of the LFP ”(Professional Football League), writes the Marseille club in a press release.

“In application of the video assistance protocol for arbitration (VAR), the entire contentious sequence was viewed and checked on the spot by the video referee, without it giving rise to a sanction. This decision was final and the disciplinary committee could not therefore re-judge it a posteriori, ”says the club, which also ensures that the conditions for referral to the committee “have not been fulfilled”.

“For all of these reasons, and pending notification of the reasons, Olympique de Marseille is therefore preparing to initiate an appeal in the near future against this decision, which is questionable on a procedural level and which risks establishing case law on the application of sanctions a posteriori, ”concludes OM.

The sanction takes effect on May 23.

During Lens-OM, a scuffle had started after a shot from Lensois Facundo Medina towards the Marseille bench, where Payet was in particular.

In the melee, the 36-year-old playmaker slapped Franck Haise’s assistant, Yannick Cahuzac, who was sent off for his hostile behavior.

Substitute since the arrival of Igor Tudor last summer, Payet resumed colors at the end of the season thanks to his remarkable entries against Auxerre then in Lens. Holder against Angers (3-1) last Sunday, Payet scored his team’s second goal.

The sanction which hits the Marseille midfielder will take effect from midnight May 23. Dimitri Payet will thus be able to play the match in Lille on Saturday but will miss the last two days, against Brest on May 27 and in Ajaccio on June 3 and would still have a match to serve next season.
