Marc Ribault is perhaps the most brilliant American guitarist of his generation. An artist whose name is associated with an entire era in the scene of the megalopolis of New York and whose radiation of personality and musicality have undeniably echoed in much wider territories. That’s why “bright” compared to “the best” or “the best” of the competitors, because since his teenage years, Mark Ribault has shone himself and seen a galaxy of musicians rise alongside him, without whom the recent music history of various genres would be unimaginable.
He studied under his protégé Franc Casseus, a guitarist and composer of Haitian origin (Frantz Casseus), the young musician arrived in New York in 1978. And then it started. It started with collectives Realtones and John Lurie (John Lurie) Lounge Lizardswhich was followed by an increasingly intense involvement in various lineups – with Karla Thomas (Carla Thomas)Wilson Pickett (Wilson Pickett), Chuck Berry (Chuck Berry) and many others.
As noted by the magazine Rolling Stone, “Marc Ribot with the 1985 album Rain Dogs has been complicit with Tom Waits (Tom Waits)starting the so-called “new strange” or new weird Americana currents and becoming the first musician to whom almost everyone can turn for help, advice and cooperation offers – Robert Plant (Robert Plant) un Elvisam Costello (Elvis Costello), Mariannai Feitfulai (Marianne Faithful) and Lori Anderson (Laurie Anderson), Norah Jones (Norah Jones) and Allen Ginsberg (Allen Ginsberg), and countless others”. As sometimes happens, Mark Ribot’s heart seems to find the right home in solo activity or in collectives, which are united by family ties and common ideals, not so much shined by the brightest stars. He still likes to gather with fellow trios Ceramic Dog, returns to no wavepunk rock and youthful experiments in noise music with bands Rootless Cosmopolitans and Shrek, is close friends with John Zorn (John Zorn), and also studies, for example, Albert Ayler (Albert Ayler) a work of art.
Most likely, the above gives you an idea of what to expect at the Riga concert. More precisely, it allows us to see that Mark Ribot’s solo concerts are unpredictable events, in which the listeners can experience a little bit of everything that his creative process tells about, or something completely different. And at the end of the day, every listener finds himself sitting on the edge of his chair, reminiscing about the spirit of the era, free improvisation, and not yet enthralled.
“Ribo played on the acoustic guitar that night and, being also a master of the electric guitar and the sounds and wails it creates, he didn’t use a single effect pedal. True, it didn’t dim the prevailing energy and the feeling of “what’s next?” was constantly in the air,” after a recent concert in London in a review Financial Times written by Mike Hobart (Mike Hobart). “The intro started with two quiet chords. Then a pause. Then a peculiar blues guitar howl. The unbending fingers took the vibrato to the extreme, a barely perceptible bass marched resolutely in the background and Ribo, completely involved in the creation of the music, captivated his audience with him.”
Composer, classical and flamenco guitar master Anna Garano will also travel to Riga with Mark Ribo. (Anna Garano) to introduce a concert in your partner’s music and life with a solo appearance. The musician, who received her academic education not only in playing an instrument, but also in musicology and music history, has been an active participant in Italian music life for several decades. Creating and performing original music, collaborating with other artists and playing in various chamber ensembles, Anna Garano has toured not only Europe, but also the United States with concerts. Her own delicate, sometimes joyful, sometimes contemplative compositions and also folk music arrangements are a place where listeners are happy to meet the artist and establish lasting acquaintances.
