Mexican former mayor José Luis Abarca was sentenced to 92 years in prison on Wednesday for the kidnapping of six activists in 2013. The 62-year-old Abarca is also suspected of the infamous disappearance of 43 students in 2014, but has yet to stand trial.
The six activists disappeared in May 2013 around the town of Iguala, in the south of the country. Abarca was mayor there at the time. The activists were later found dead. Among them was the locally known leftist politician Arturo Hernández Cardona.
In addition to the prison sentence, Abarca must pay a fine of 920,700 Mexican pesos (about 48,000 euros).
Abarca is also accused of the disappearance and suspected murder of 43 students in 2014 while serving as mayor. The students disappeared on their way to a meeting. They are believed to have been handed over to a drug cartel. The remains of only a few of them have been found.
The former mayor and his wife were arrested more than a month after the disappearance. They will be charged with the infamous case at a later date.
