Stop retail theft. That’s the goal of a plan by Mayor Adams that involves collaboration between the judicial system, police, government and local businesses.
To do this, a new program will be created that seeks to help those people who steal for addiction or mental health problems so that they receive the services they need and are not imprisoned.
Likewise, work will be done to prosecute repeat thieves, who, according to data, are responsible for 30 percent of all business robberies.

For their part, local businesses will share information in real time in order to know where the thefts are taking place and prevent the same person from robbing different premises.
Locally, a 44 percent increase in retail thefts was reported from 2021 to 2022.
Last year there were 22,000 arrests for these crimes. 327 arrested were repeat offenders.
