The 24-year-old man who was arrested last week for possible involvement in arson in an apartment in The Hague has died. The citizen of The Hague has ended his life in his cell, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports.
Guards found the man dead in his cell on Monday morning. He was arrested last Tuesday for possible involvement in the arson. His pre-trial detention was extended by the examining magistrate on Friday. He was held in custody in a Penitentiary Psychiatric Center (PPC).
Five people were injured in the fire on the night of 18 to 19 April, two of them seriously. The fire was started in the stairwell of the apartment complex on Prinsengracht in The Hague. All fourteen homes were evacuated.
The thirty residents were taken care of in a nearby café. Eight homes were so damaged that they were declared temporarily uninhabitable. The investigation into the arson is still ongoing.
During the investigation into the fire, the police found fire accelerants. When investigating the circumstances, the 24-year-old Hagenaar came into the picture.
