Liverpool will say goodbye to former record signing Naby Keita and striker Roberto Firmino at the end of the season. The two reserve players have an expiring contract at Anfield and will leave the club on a free transfer.
Especially the transfer-free departure of 28-year-old Keita will hurt Liverpool. In the summer of 2017, the club deposited around sixty million euros for the midfielder, who came over from RB Leipzig a year later.
At the time Liverpool and RB Leipzig reached an agreement, Keita was the most expensive signing in the Premier League club’s history. That record was broken six months later by Virgil van Dijk, who came over from Southampton for about 84 million euros.
In the successful year with the Champions League win in 2019, Firmino formed a golden trio with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané. The striker played 360 games for Liverpool and was accurate 109 times. This season he had a reserve role with coach Jürgen Klopp’s team.
In addition to Keita and Firmino, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also walk out of Liverpool for free. Just like Keïta and Firmino, they had to do it more often than desired this season with a raid at ‘The Reds’.
Liverpool announces that the players will be given a dignified farewell in the short term. The club is fifth in the Premier League and will play two more league games this season: against Aston Villa (May 20) and Southampton (May 28), which has already been relegated.
