Ankara summoned the German ambassador, on Wednesday, against the backdrop of the “arrest” of two Turkish journalists in the city of Frankfurt, in the center-west of the country, according to “Agence France Presse”.
The head of the communication department in the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, expressed his dissatisfaction after the German police arrested Ismail Aral, the envoy of the Turkish newspaper “Sabah”, and the director of editorial affairs in the newspaper “Sabah Europe”, Cemil Albay.
Altun considered that the raid on the home and office of the Turkish journalists in the early morning hours, and the confiscation of their computers and phones constituted a “public violation of the freedom of the press,” as he put it.
The Turkish official stressed that “Germany’s position regarding silencing journalists is unacceptable,” expressing “Ankara’s concern about the pressures exerted on freedom of the press” in that European country, according to what he said.
On the other hand, a local German public prosecutor denied to AFP that the two journalists had been arrested, but confirmed that they had been charged with “dangerous publication of personal data”.
