“Alias” at the Orangerie Theater – Prologue 05/23
“You walk along the same streets, you sit on the same benches, but the perspectives from which you experience the city are different,” says Olja Artes. In her new play “Alias. Parallel Worlds 2030” deals with homelessness in Cologne. The theater group for people with a history of addiction has been developing mostly autobiographical productions in cooperation with the Sommerblut Kulturfestival since 2017.
This time, however, the ensemble would like to act more as a mouthpiece: “In the future contract of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, we came across the following statement: ‘We are not reconciled with homelessness and are joining the European Union’s goal of eliminating homelessness by 2030 at the latest.’ seemed utopian to us given the current situation,” explains the director. Although the ensemble members’ own experiences flow into the performance again this year, the group was also specifically looking for encounters with people who can say more about the subject: “We met people who are or were affected by homelessness and met people who work in the context of homelessness, got into conversation and collected impressions of places and places like Ebertplatz and Neumarkt.”
The various voices appear in the performance as audio tracks, backed by recordings that reflect the city’s soundscape: the voice of the KVB, for example, appears again and again. In combination with dance elements, selected poetry and various prose texts, a collage is created that is intended to make homelessness visible: “It’s about not looking the other way, but starting a conversation. develop understanding for each other. Homelessness doesn’t happen in a parallel world,” explains Artes.
In order to enable everyone to visit the performance, a ticket system with different levels is offered: You can buy tickets from as little as five euros, but higher-priced tickets are also available. Those who cannot afford a ticket at all have the opportunity to contact the ensemble to be able to participate free of charge.
