The currently largest discount chain empire in the world had its humble beginnings in 1973; The first Lidl branch opened in Ludwigshafen-Mundenheim. It soon happened in quick succession: more and more branches were added. With currently around 3200 branches, the food retailer is one of the leading retail companies in Germany. Lidl alone makes a good 100 billion euros in sales every year
